Kilkenny is one of Ireland’s best preserved medieval cities, known for its castle, narrow streets, and rich architectural heritage.
The city grew around a 12th century Norman settlement and quickly became one of Ireland’s most important centres of trade and administration. Its strategic location on the River Nore helped it develop into a thriving market town, while the construction of Kilkenny Castle established it as a key stronghold in medieval Ireland.
Over the centuries, the city became known for its distinctive architecture, with landmarks including St Canice’s Cathedral, Rothe House and the Medieval Mile preserving much of its historic character. Many of its streets still follow their medieval layout, offering a glimpse into Ireland’s past.
