Created during the 1940s with the construction of the Poulaphouca Dam on the River Liffey, the reservoir was built to generate hydroelectric power and provide drinking water to Dublin and the surrounding counties. The flooding of the valley transformed the landscape, creating the extensive network of lakes seen today.
Over the years, the area has become a popular destination for walking, cycling, fishing and water sports. The lakes are surrounded by the Wicklow Mountains, woodland and rolling farmland, with scenic routes such as the Blessington Greenway offering spectacular views across the water.
Today, Blessington Lakes is one of County Wicklow’s most visited outdoor attractions. Its peaceful setting, abundant wildlife and dramatic scenery make it a favourite destination throughout the year for locals and visitors exploring Ireland’s Ancient East.
