The building dates from around 1790, and the fine timber shopfront that gives it so much of its character was added around 1890. The original segmental-arched doorcase survives, with fluted Composite columns standing on a limestone base, and the whole frontage is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. It’s the kind of shopfront that has almost disappeared from Irish cities, and it’s the reason this one was a pleasure to paint.
Inside, it’s more like somebody’s sitting room than a bar — no television, no piped music, just the long counter, the winding stairs and walls hung with work by local artists. The pint has a reputation to match, and the covered beer garden out the back, in a laneway off Catherine Street, is a small masterpiece of what you can do with a city alley: flower baskets, varnished barrels, and a spot to sit whatever the weather.
If you’ve ever had a pint here, you’ll know why it’s on the list.
