The Forty Foot swimming cove, located in Sandycove, Dublin, has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. Originally an exclusive spot for men, it gained popularity among the British Army officers stationed in the nearby Martello tower. The cove’s name is believed to derive either from the fortification (“forty foot”) or from the 40th Foot Regiment of the British Army that frequented the area.
Throughout the 20th century, the Forty Foot Dublin became a more inclusive swimming spot. In the 1970s, local feminist groups challenged the male-only tradition by staging protests, leading to the eventual acceptance of women swimmers. This shift marked a significant cultural change, transforming the cove into a symbol of social progress and inclusivity in Dublin.
Today, the Forty Foot Dublin remains a beloved destination for both locals and tourists. Its deep waters, stunning views, and historical significance attract year-round swimmers, particularly those who brave the icy waters during Christmas Day swims. The cove is also famously mentioned in James Joyce’s “Ulysses,” further cementing its place in Dublin’s cultural and literary heritage.
