Blake’s of the Hollow is one of the finest Victorian bars left in Ireland, sitting in a dip on Church Street in the middle of Enniskillen. The gold lettering across the front still reads William Blake.

The bar takes its layout and its fittings from a refurbishment carried out in 1887 by Richard Herbert, and remarkably little has been changed since. It is a Grade B listed building, and CAMRA’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors rates the interior three stars, its highest grade, for pubs of outstanding national historic importance. The long counter has a white marble top, and four large casks stand vertically in the bar back, where spirits were once drawn from them.
The name comes from two things. The pub sits in a hollow in the centre of the town, and the Blake family have had it since 1929 and still do. Locally it is just Blake’s.
A print like this tends to end up on a wall a long way from Church Street, which is fair enough. Enniskillen travels well.
